When a man returns to his beachside hometown in Australia, he is humiliated in front of his teenage son by a local group of surfers who lay claim to ownership of the secluded beach of his childhood. He received a six-minute standing ovation at the 77th Cannes Film Festival. The story sets up Cage arriving at a beach that holds great significance to him, but when he is ridiculed and banned from surfing there with his son, it sets off a series of events that become increasingly detached from reality, leaving the audience to question even the reality we are witnessing. One aspect I appreciate is the exploration of the sunk cost fallacy, the tendency to stick with a venture we have invested in even when the current costs outweigh the benefits. Having recently faced a similar decision, I understand how difficult it is to step back and accept a loss. It was a very enjoyable experience to see this with Cage and the rest of the crew at the GL Theater.😄
